Reply with quote | #3 | Hi Marlene,
Welcome to our discussion. It would be great if you could post a short biographical paragraph under mine in the opening post.
Eventually we will all grow in our comfort with using the on line forum for communication. I have done it for a couple of years and am still adjusting. My next goal is to figure out how to get a picture on the post.
I look forward to beginning our discussion of possible units and lessons.
One of the agreements we need to make has to do with how many times a week to check in and if we want to agree to a specific day to check in. What are your thoughts on this?

Reply with quote | #4 | Hi, my name is Atzi Villamar, since 1978 I have been involved in the teaching profession in Mexico as well as in the United States. I study in National Autonomous University of Mexico; I have BS Biology and an English teacher degree.
In Mexico City I taught Biology at Middle and High School, in addition I also taught English. In the United States I have worked as a teacher at Churchill High School for 4 years teaching bilingual, bicultural classes of Biology, Health, American History, Global Studies, Study skills and Spanish for native Spanish speakers mainly for ELL students.
The students feel better about attending school where there is someone who could culturally and linguistically (English/Spanish) connect with them and I feel I am contributing to their growth in content areas as well as on personal bases in a very immediate and direct way. In my Biology class we need to work on the genetics chapter as part of the Oregon Standards, and I think is going to be of vital importance to motivate the students to learn about the transgenic corn and its ecological and economical consequences in Mexico, because it had been causing the fall of the corn prices and the abandoning of farming and migration of many families to the USA. I am very please to connect trough this class with more teachers.

Reply with quote | #5 | Hi Atzi and welcome.
The middle level science people will join in with the middle level language arts and social studies people to work on an integrated unit. I am sure that this can provide some creative and useful dialog.
Let's both take a look at the middle level LA/SS conversation.
Is the genetics material what you are working on now or is that what you are planning for spring term?
I look forward to meeting with you soon.
